Respawn might bring more PvE content to Apex Legends post COVID-19 pandemic

It looks like we might see Apex Legends move away from being just a “battle-royale” game in the near future as Game Director Chad Grenier recently talked about the possibility of PvE content and plans reagarding it in an interview with Eurogamer.

When asked about what direction the game is moving in with the recent announcement of ‘Arenas’ game-mode, Chad Grenier, Game Director at Respawn Entertainment – Head of Apex Legends had some interesting stuff to share.

“We dipped our toes in a PvE mode a few seasons back with quests”. He also mentioned how most of his team comes from single-player backgrounds and how they love making single-player content. Some of them also worked on Titanfall 2’s single-player campaign.

Talking about the team’s efforts in bringing some PvE action to the game Grenier said,”With all of the awesome legends and all the lore and storytelling that we’re doing, the team naturally I think would love to deliver some sort of content that’s like that, like single-player PvE content“, he said.

Now all this might get you excited for the game, but due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic Respawn has decided to focus on PvP action for now keeping employee health in mind.

“…We’re always balancing team health, and making sure we’re not crunching,” Grenier said. “Because our focus is on PvP, we had to move away from that type of content for the time being. That’s not to say in the future that we might not see some kind of PvE or campaign or something like that. But right now, we’re not really focused on it – we’re thinking about how to continue with a PvP game and continue storytelling. They’re making awesome shorts like Northstar that was just released. But the desire is certainly there.”, he said.

While speaking to Eurogamer last year Greneir shared similar thoughts. “Right now we’re a battle royale game. I think if you look into the future, we have a lot of conversations of, you know, should we expand beyond battle royale? We have this roster of legends that people love – how else can we use them? I think looking into the future, you’re probably going to see the game becoming more than just a battle royale game. You see we have all these LTMs (limited time modes) and other ways to play. I think that’s a great starting point.”, he said back then.

This all makes much more sense now and you can see that Apex Legends is really becoming something more than just a “battle-royale” as the developer explores new possibilities.
