Steam Deck’s performance was the priority for Valve says Gabe Newell
Valve yesterday announced their new handheld gaming device, the Steam Deck and it is amazing.
In a short interview with IGN, Valve’s President Gabe Newell talked about Steam Deck, what it offers and its pricing across various models. “[For Steam Deck] Price point was secondary and painful, but that was a critical aspect to it. But the first thing was the performance, and the experience was the biggest and most fundamental constraint driving this[the project].” said Gabe Newell, Co-founder and president, Valve Corporation while talking with IGN about the development of Steam Deck.
Cleary the focus was on performance, and that could very well be one of the reason why all 3 models use the same hardware except the internal storage. Steam Deck also comes with a expandable microSD storage slot.
It basically is a handheld gaming PC. There’s no exclusivity here, you can even play non-Steam games. What that means is you can log onto 3rd party platforms such as Xbox, Epic Games, Origin, etc. to access your games there. And that’s one of the main reasons why so many are excited and eager to get their hands on Steam Deck.
You can even uninstall SteamOS and replace it with Windows 10/11 if you want to. If you install Windows and connect it with a monitor, keyboard and a mouse, you probably won’t even notice that it’s not a desktop PC.
The Steam Deck comes in 3 different models, each differentiated with the size, type and speed of internal storage.

Valve is also working on a docking station for the device which you will be able to buy separately, but you can also use any other USB Type C docking station if you want.
Valve is capturing a new untapped gaming market with this new hardware. Although Nintendo is the leader in handheld gaming experiences, with Steam Deck Valve could easily dethrone Nintendo. The main reason being, it can run almost any game a PC can. Switch users have been asking Nintendo to port their favorite games to the Switch console, but not anymore, if they buy a Steam Deck, they won’t have that issue. Also coming back to the performance point, the Steam Deck is a more powerful device as compared to the Switch. It’ll be interesting to see how the rumored Switch Pro would compare to Steam Deck once both the devices are out. But at least for now, Steam Deck clearly a better device.
At the time of writing the Steam Deck can only be reserved in the US, Canada, European Union, and the UK. Valve says that they will be releasing information on availability in other regions soon.
