Epic Games files lawsuits against Apple & Google
Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite has filed lawsuits against both Apple & Google after they removed Fortnite from their respective App stores.
Epic Games recently launched ‘The Fortnite MEGA Drop’ update introducing a permanent discount of up to 20% on V-Bucks (Fortnite’s in-game currency). The update also enables a direct payment method that allows users to bypass the app store/play store payment methods and lets them buy V-Bucks directly from Epic Games.
This violates the policies of both Google’s Play Store as well as Apple’s App Store.
Both tech giants earn a 30% commission on revenue through app purchases for all apps. This was no longer possible for Fortnite, with its newest update that deliberately introduced another in-game payment method.
For instance, the picture below shows Epic’s direct payment helps users save 20% on while buying V-Bucks.
Epic filed a lawsuit against Apple in California, alleging that Apple has a non-competitive conduct in its iOS App distribution market and Apple’s monopoly on mobile iOS platforms.
The lawsuit also states, “Epic brings this suit to end Apple’s unfair and anti-competitive actions that Apple undertakes to unlawfully maintain its monopoly in two distinct, multibillion dollar markets: the iOS App Distribution Market & the iOS In-App Payment Processing Market”
Fortnite released a video parody to ‘1984 Apple’s Macintosh Commercial’ on 13th August.
Epic also has filed another lawsuit against Google. The lawsuit also has an interesting claim from Epic that involves OnePlus & LG.
Epic claims that Google forced OnePlus to back out on a deal that would see a 90 FPS version of Fortnite for OnePlus devices that would bypass Play Store to directly install Fortnite. This version would help OnePlus highlight the OnePlus 90hz display. A similar deal with LG was also disrupted due to Google’s pressure.
Fortnite is still available to download through Epic Store & Samsung Galaxy Store.
#FreeFortnite has picked up steam on Twitter, and both the tech giants are receiving a massive backlash from the Fortnite community as well as other gamers.
