Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro gaming performance review

The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro is a smartphone in the higher end segment which launched in September 2020. The phone comes with a powerful Snapdragon 865 chipset, 8 GB RAM and 128 GB ROM with UFS 3.1 technology.

It offers a 6.67” LCD FULL HD+ 144hz adaptive display. The phone has a 108 MP camera with 13MP ultra wide lens, 5 MP Macro and a front 20 MP camera.

As this is a gaming specific review, we will not be going into the rest of the details that aren’t related to the phone’s gaming performance. Now, let’s talk about the gaming performance of Mi 10T Pro.

Gaming Performance:

In Call of Duty Mobile, you can get upto 60 FPS with 144hz refresh rate at very high graphics and max framerate. The gameplay is smooth and you won’t feel like the device performance is holding you back.

While playing Genshin Impact at maximum graphical settings, you can see the framerate anywhere between 50-70 FPS. Yes, we know it is a big range. The reason is that when in a battle you might see a notable dip in FPS. But it is because the game needs more optimizations, which we will likely see in the future.

In Fortnite Mobile, you will get around 30-35 FPS with max 3D resolution and quality set at epic also at 144hz.

The phone is totally capable of offering mid to high end gaming performance at a good framerate.

The phone also has a strong 5000mAh battery which definitely helps in longer gaming sessions. It also comes with a 33W “fast” charger.

Some notable cons:

No IP Rating:

Yes. Mi 10T Pro doesn’t have an IP rating. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the phone is vulnerable to water or steam. Still, no official IP certification means you need to be extra cautious that water, steam, dust or any kind of foreign object doesn’t enter the phone in any way.

No 3.5 mm audio port:

Yes, you don’t get a dedicated audio jack. This means if your earphones come with a 3.5 mm jack, you will have to use a 3.5mm to USB type C converter in order to use it.

Now, Xiaomi does provide a USB type C to 3.5mm dongle, but no dedicated 3.5mm port is still a problem. “Why is it a problem?”, one might ask. Even though the world is moving towards wireless technology, most gamers still use wired products as it has lesser communication latency. Also, using the same USB type C port for both charging and earphones, means you cannot do both at the same time, unless you’re using an extension device.

Wireless Charging:

For the higher price point the phone comes at, they should’ve included wireless charging.

33W Charger:

Again the same thing, for its price this phone should come with a 50W or 65W charger. Some other smartphones that are even lower in price also come with a 65 W charger these days.

While the phone doesn’t offer the best possible features at its price point, it still is a phone that can deliver good gaming performance.

Fingerprint reader:

The phone comes with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, which hasn’t received much love by the consumers as it comes with a lot of disadvantages. Side-mounted fingerprint sensors have lesser surface area which reduces accessibility and increases the probability of false positives.

Also, left handed users have to use their finger to unlock the phone which again isn’t accessible enough due to the width of the phone.

Bulkier and taller:

You can check this for yourself, the phone is a lot bulkier and taller in comparison to its counterparts. Now this might not seem important at first, but when using the phone extensively you will definitely feel that it is indeed heavier. Also the taller design might not appeal to those with shorter hands.

No AMOLED screen:

The phone doesn’t come with an AMOLED screen. For the price being paid, we expected the phone to come with an AMOLED screen display.

In an interview with Techradar, talking about not using an AMOLED display in the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro, Daniel Hoang Desjarlais, Product Marketing Manager at Xiaomi said, “It is better to have a high-quality LCD, the best of the best LCD, versus a middling sort of AMOLED”. He also said, “There are issues with AMOLED and certain peoples’ eyes – I think it’s like 10% of the population, when looking at an AMOLED display, experience very heavy eyestrain.”

Our Take: Overall the gaming performance on this phone is good. It is great in both gaming and general purpose usage. But considering its price, while the phone wins on some fronts,  it loses on many others. The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro is an option in the gaming phone category, but it isn’t the best one, especially for the price point it comes at.

Note: We reached out and requested the brand on multiple occasions to share a review device but they cited unavailability at all times. One of our reader, Sahil Oberoi was kind enough to lend his device for review purposes. We thank him for his generosity.
