Stats & data of YouTube’s 10 most mentioned gaming brands

If you still wonder where to find gamers and what social media platform has the strongest gaming community, search no more. YouTube is the gamer’s paradise – let the numbers speak:

  • it generates 800+ billion views on gaming-related content;
  • gets 90+ million hours of games live streamed;
  • gets 250 million gaming videos uploaded.

And all these for only half a year, according to YouTube’s own report. In 2020, when COVID-19 and lockdowns hit hard, YouTube Gaming saw a drastic boost, there even was a record set: it clocked 100+ billion hours of watch time.

No wonder gamers love YouTube and search for content there – and gaming brands, in turn, search for this type of audience and reach them with the help of YouTube gaming influencers. Actually, the influencers are real stars and celebrities among the YouTube community. See for yourself: who hasn’t heard about PewDiePie? He was #1 influencer by the number of subscribers for years and lost the championship only in 2022. It’s no secret that PewDiePie originally started as a gaming creator uploading Minecraft videos.

BuzzGuru did a deep research and found out what gaming brands are the most popular on YouTube. Here are the results: read further to learn about 10 games that were the most mentioned on YouTube in 2022.

10. Elden Ring

To create this game, its producers collaborated with an influencer of his own fantasy kind – George R. R. Martin. Considering the game got more than 124K mentions from more than 8K YouTube channels in 2022, it definitely wasn’t a bad idea.

Elden Ring is an action RPG that suggests exploring an open fantasy world. It’s the fantasy you think of when you hear the word: with heroes of sword and magic, of course. This setting is one of the most loved by gamers, and even our top list shows it: 4 of 10 games here are fantasy ones (including Fortnite that combines fantasy and sci-fi).

9. Mobile Legends: Bang bang

When you first open Mobile Legends: Bang bang, it seems a bit (or a lot) familiar, doesn’t it? Not only gamers think so: Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends, even sued Moonton, Mobile Legends’ developer, because of copyright infringement. Also, Moonton’s CEO was once Tencent’s (Riot’s parent company) employee, and in the end Shanghai’s court ruled he had to pay almost $3 million for violating a law regarding Non-Compete Agreements.

The whole story seems complicated and somewhat unhealthy in terms of competition, but now we have what we have: two popular fantasy games, both on our list of the most mentioned on YouTube.

In 2022, Mobile Legends: Bang bang got the total of 150K+ mentions by YouTube gaming influencers. There were only 3430 of them – it’s the smallest number of channels on this list – but the gamers seem to be very keen on the game and loyal enough to bring it to the 9th place.

8. FIFA 22

It would have been surprising not to have a football game on the top list in 2022, when the FIFA World Cup took place exactly in 2022, in Qatar.

FIFA 22 is the only game on the list that simulates something that actually exists in real life. Also, it’s the only one that doesn’t have “action” among its genres. No world exploring, no shooting, no role playing, no magic or timey-wimey stuff. Just sports – and it still works and wins the heart of gamers. But of course we shouldn’t forget the timing and the real football championship that helped FIFA 22 become one of the most mentioned games on YouTube.

It got over 158K mentions on more than 4K YouTube channels, which also makes FIFA lovers very devoted, as their number is not that big compared to others on the list.

7. League of Legends

This one was foreshadowed when you learned about Mobile legends. League of Legends (see, even the names are somewhat similar) is another fantasy game that has a long love story with gamers – it was released in 2009 and it gets on top lists year by year. 2022 was no exception: during the year, over 6K YouTube influencers mentioned the game for almost 256K times.

Also, there’s a number of projects connected with League of Legends and its descendants and supporters that help make the game even more popular, especially on YouTube that focuses on video content. Like Arcane – the animated series produced by Riot Games in collaboration with Netflix, and K/DA – a virtual K-pop group that also gets animated music videos.

6. PUBG Mobile

Gamers’ long loved battle royale game PUBG Mobile got almost 283K mentions on YouTube made by almost 8K influencers. Although people have loved the battle royale genre for years, PUBG was the game to popularize it and make it one of the most played, mentioned, and profitable video game genres. Here’s a bit more about profit: as of December 2022, PUBG Mobile crossed $9 billion in total consumer spending.

There is yet another milestone reached by the game. For three years in a row – in 2020, 2021, and 2022 – PUBG mobile had been nominated for Esports Mobile Game of the Year. And only in 2022 it finally won the award.

5. Grand Theft Auto V

Another veteran game that never leaves top lists and remains one of the most popular among gamers and social media influencers. Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013, and in 2022 it got over 316K mentions on over 14K YouTube accounts. The number of YouTube gamers uploading videos dedicated to Grand Theft Auto V is almost twice that of the previous game on the list!

Here’s another interesting thing: in 2022, the game was reported to have sold over 175 million copies worldwide – note that people still buy copies and wait for them to be shipped! Also, 2022 brought Grand Theft Auto V the nomination for the Stream Game of the Year.

4. Fortnite: Save The World

Unlike many other games on the list that are PvP (player versus player), Fortnite: Save The World is a PvE (player versus environment) one. It suggests a gamer to become one of the few people left on Earth after some incident and strive to survive in cooperation with others. The world seems to be more of a sci-fi setting, but Fortnite also includes fantasy elements. Also, there is a separate PvP version Fortnite Battle Royale.

In 2022, Fortnine was mentioned almost 346K times on 12K+ YouTube channels. The game has over 350 million registered users and is popular not only on YouTube: Fortnite is Twitch’s most popular game according to the BuzzGuru research.

3. Garena Free Fire

One more battle royale game – and another fantasy one here. Garena Free Fire was developed based on the PUBG’s gameplay. No surprise Garena got sued for copyright infringement. Despite that, Garena won the Esports Mobile Game of the Year award in 2020 and 2021, when PUBG also was nominated.

In 2022, Garena Free Fire got 388K+ mentions on YouTube. 9,5K influencers uploaded videos mentioning the game. The most of the mentioned came from India, which is surprising: Garena was banned in India on February 14, 2022.

2. ROBLOX

ROBLOX is not just a game: it’s a platform that allows users to create their own spaces, practically their own games and play them. You definitely know a lot about Meta. So ROBLOX is about the meta space, too, and it was developed a lot earlier and originally released in 2006.

In 2022, more than 11K influencers mentioned ROBLOX on YouTube. The game got 423K+ mentions in total. On average, the game was mentioned 1372 times a day. Most of the mentions appeared on YouTube on Sundays – 16.2% of them.

1. Minecraft

The never losing leader. Almost 20K influencers mentioned Minecraft on YouTube in 2022. They got the game over 522K mentions in total, which is 23% more than the ROBLOX’s, our silver medalist.

Minecraft is the game that once brought the famous PewDiePie to the top. Now other powerful influencers bring Minecraft itself to the first place among the most popular games on YouTube. Don’t even doubt it’s financially good, too: in 2022, Minecraft mobile alone generated over $102 million, and it only makes approximately 30% of the total Minecraft revenue.
