HyperX SoloCast – A bang for your buck microphone

The HyperX SoloCast is a condenser USB desktop microphone, made for gamers, streamers, and content creators.

It is significantly smaller in size as compared to the QuadCast and also takes up less desk space which makes it a more viable choice for streamers that are always on the move, and even those with smaller desk space. The microphone is around 450g in weight with both the stand and the USB cable. The microphone looks quite durable thanks to its hard plastic body and appropriate use of metal where needed.

It is important to note that SoloCast is a Cardioid microphone. It means that the microphone will pick sound from the front & the sides, but won’t pick sound from the back. Which is better in many cases over an omnidirectional microphone. For instance, a cardioid microphone being front facing won’t pick the clicky noise coming from your keyboard or mouse. But, you will need to pay attention to set it up right, making sure it doesn’t start picking surrounding sounds and only picks your voice.

Setup:

It is a USB microphone that comes with a USB Type-C that goes into the microphone, and a standard USB-A on the other end which goes into the PC. The USB cable is 2 metre in length which is definitely enough.

Also, it comes with it’s own microphone stand. The stand is removable, allowing you to place the microphone on a boom arm. The stand also allows you to tilt the microphone 90 degrees to both left and right. It also can be swiveled to 90 degrees.

It is likely that you will need a boom arm to adjust the height and bring the microphone closer to you. The microphone has 3.8 & 5.8 inch threads at the bottom, making it compatible with most boom arms. The threads are made of metal, meaning they are more durable, and the chances of you damaging the threads while separating the microphone from the boom arm are reduced.

Features:

The best thing about the HyperX SoloCast microphone is that it comes with a “Tap to Mute” sensor and a LED indicator. You won’t see this in most other microphones. For someone like me who lives in a busy locality where street noise forces you to bind your microphone to a key and use the push to talk mode in TeamSpeak or Discord, this Tap to Mute feature is a boon. You just have to tap it and the microphone goes into mute. Tap it again, and we’re back.

The LED indicator let’s you know whether you are muted or not, so there probably won’t be moments where you realize you have been talking for a while, but your pals can’t hear you because you’ve muted yourself.

Its Plug N Play feature is also quite useful for those who travel frequently.

The HyperX SoloCast is a good fit for upcoming as well as professional streamers & content creators. You can buy it for INR 5,790 on Amazon.in after its launch on January 28 2021.

Our Take:

Overall the HyperX SoloCast is a user-friendly microphone. It has user-friendly features such as Tap to Mute sensor, LED indicator, Plug N Play capability, smaller size & weight, etc. It is a cheaper alternative for the QuadCast or the Blue Yeti microphone. Of course it doesn’t offer as much functionality as the QuadCast, but still is pretty good and a bang for your buck peripheral. You should definitely consider buying it if you need a good condenser microphone and are on a budget.
